BEREA, Ky. – The Berea College women's basketball team scored 43 second-half points as they defeat Campbellsville University-Harrodsburg (Ky.) 76-56 on Wednesday evening in the Seabury Center.
With the victory, head coach
Trent Milby captured his 150th collegiate win as the Mountaineers extended their winning streak to seven games. Berea improved their overall record to 13-3 while the Pioneers fall to 6-12.
Sophomore
Destiny Combs recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 12 rebounds. Senior
Bailee Vanover knocked down two three-pointers, scoring 15 points while grabbing five rebounds and recording a season-high five steals. Freshmen
Drea Satori scored 10 points to go with three steals.
The Mountaineers took a seven-point lead early as Berea knocked down their first four shots of the evening. Combs started the scoring for the Mountaineers, driving into the lane for a layup. On the following offensive possession, sophomore
Aaliyah Hampton swung the ball to Vanover for a three-pointer. After the Pioneers tied the game at 5-5, Berea used a 6-0 run to take a 12-5 lead with 6:24 left in the quarter. Campbellsville-Harrodsburg managed the damage, outscoring the Mountaineers 11-5 as Berea led 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.
The Pioneers started the second quarter with a 9-0 run to take an eight-point lead over Berea with 7:47 left in the half. Senior
Destanie Love ended the run with a putback layup to cut the deficit 25-19. Despite Campbellsville-Harrodsburg responding with a quick five points, the Mountaineers didn't falter as they regained the lead with 2:49 remaining.
Following two successful trips to the free-throw line by Hampton and Combs, freshmen
Jayden Merriweather connected a pass to Combs for a midrange jumper to trail by two. Berea took the lead on the following possession, as Merriweather netted a shot from beyond the arc to lead 31-30. The Mountaineers shot five-for-15 in the second quarter as they trailed 35-33 going into halftime.
The Mountaineers hit their stride in the third quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 23-12 in the third frame. Berea took a four-point lead with 6:49 left in the quarter behind an 8-2 scoring run. Vanover ignited the Berea run, knocking down a mid-range jump shot to draw the game even at 37-37. After a pair of free throws from Combs, Vanover found herself open once again netting her shot to put the Mountaineers out in front 41-39 with 6:20 left in the quarter.
Campbellsville-Harrodsburg tied the game with a shot in the paint before a three-pointer by Merriweather pushed Berea ahead. Berea carried their momentum into the fourth quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 20-9 in the final quarter of play as the Mountaineers came out on top 76-56.
The Berea College women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, January 22 traveling to face Wesleyan College (Ga.). Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
