Cold Start Doomed Mountaineers on the Road Against the Panthers

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Berea College men's basketball team fell to USA South Conference opponent LaGrange College 85-66 on Saturday afternoon.

The loss is the Mountaineer's sevenths straight as Berea's record falls to 4-11 and 0-4 in conference play. The Panthers improve to an 8-9 overall record with a 3-1 conference record.

The Mountaineers were paced in scoring by freshman guard Trey Minter with 17, shooting six of 13 from the floor. Junior guard Isaac Caudill chipping in 12.

Berea started the game ice-cold, shooting 29 percent from the field, compared to the red-hot Panthers (64 percent from the field.) Going into the half, the Mountaineers were faced with a 24-point deficit as the Panthers put up a first-half total of 45 to the Mountaineers 21.

The Mountaineers did not go down without a fight, but the Panther's lead was just too much to overcome. In the second half, Berea outscored LaGrange 45-40, shooting 46 percent from the field, 36 percent from behind the arc, and an impressive 80 percent from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Kevion Hudson shot five-for-five from the free-throw line in his nine-point game.

Sophomore forward Tyler Boggs snagged a team-high seven rebounds, with freshman forward Kaeden Twiggs and Caudill each pulling down five apiece. Defensively, the Mountaineers got an impressive showing from freshman guard John Stanford, who came off the bench and swiped three steals to add to Boggs's two blocked shots.

The Mountaineers will play the second half of their weekend road trip on Jan. 30th against conference opponent Huntingdon College (6-9, 0-4 in conference) at 2 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama.
