BEREA, Ky. – Senior guard
Bailee Vanover recorded a game-high 22 points to lead the Berea College women's basketball team in a 67-56 victory over Brevard College (N.C.). With the win, the Mountaineers expand their winning streak to eleven games.
The Mountaineers currently stand with a 17-3 overall record and 11-0 in USA South Conference play. The Tornadoes fall to 9-7 and 4-4 in conference action.
Sophomore guard
Aaliyah Hampton totaled 18 points while shooting six-for-18 and sophomore forward
Destiny Combs corralled six rebounds to go with her 15 points. As a team, Berea had eight different student-athletes collect at least two rebounds.
The Tornadoes took control of the contest early, jumping out to a 14-5 advantage. The Mountaineers continued to fight as they outscored Brevard 13-4 the remainder of the first quarter to tie the match at the end of the first 10 minutes. Combs started Berea's scoring burst as she grabbed an offensive rebound and finished a putback layup for her first points of the game. Both teams shot a combined 14-29 from the field as they were tied 18-18 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Mountaineers take the lead with 3:06 remaining in the half. Hampton scored the first six points of the second frame for Berea as she finished a pair of layups and two free throws for the Mountaineers to take a 24-22 advantage. Both teams continued to trade baskets to end the half as Berea took a 30-27 lead going into halftime. The Mountaineers had three players with five or more points at the break with Hampton (12), Vanover (8), and Combs (6).
The contest came down to the final quarter as both sides were tied 43-43 to start the fourth. The Mountaineers jumped out to a seven-point lead as freshman
Drea Satori converted a layup in the lane, followed by a three-pointer from Hampton and a Vanover layup. Brevard did well to weather the storm, pulling to within three points with 5:33 remaining in the game.
Just as the Tornadoes turned it into a one-possession contest, the Mountaineers exploded for a 10-2 run taking a double-digit advantage with a little under three minutes remaining. Brevard still had fight left in them, knocking down a shot from beyond the arc and a layup to trim the deficit to six. Brevard's late rally was cut short as Vanover converted a tough and-one with 67 seconds left in the contest to give Berea another double-digit lead as the Mountaineers come away with a hard-fought 67-56 win over Brevard.
The Berea College women's basketball team looks to expand its winning streak on Tuesday, Feb. 1 hosting Covenant College (Ga.). Tipoff is slated for 6:00 p.m. at the Seabury Center.
