Volleyball Keeps Winning Streak Alive in Five-Set Wins over Piedmont and Huntingdon

DEMOREST, Ga.- The Berea College Volleyball Team traveled to Demorest, GA to play in a Collegiate Conference of the South Tri-match against Piedmont University and Huntingdon College this past Saturday.
 
The Mountaineers added to more conference wins to their record after beating the Piedmont Lions and Huntingdon Hawks in two 5-set battles. In the first set against Piedmont College, the Mountaineers were able to dominate the Lions and win the set (25-14). However, the Lions came back and won set 2 and set 3 (23-25, 23,25). After being down 11-15, the Mountaineers were able to tie 15-15 with Idymel Ayala Rivera at the serving line. After this, the set became a point-by-point battle until three consecutive kills by Leetham, Ramic and Santana that gave the Mountaineers the pass for a 5th set (25-23). The Mountaineers started of strong with a 5-0 lead over the Lions and ultimately won the game with a kill by Robles (15-10).
 
 Junior Julie Santana led the Mountaineers offense with 17 kills followed by Vanessa Ramic with 10 kills. Senior libero Fabiana De Jesus had a career-high match with 41 digs. Setter Idymel Ayala Rivera helped set up the Mountaineer offense with 43 assists.
 
In the second game of the day, the Mountaineers faced the Huntingdon College Hawks. The Mountaineers started off strong winning the first two sets (25-22, 25-17). However, the Hawks were able to come back and win set 3 and 4 (13-25, 18-25). The Mountaineers were able to come back and win set 5 with a kill by Ramic (15-11)
 
Once again, Santana led the team with 16 kills followed by Brenda Davila with 10 kills. Idymel Ayala Rivera had 25 assists. De Jesus led the team with 29 digs followed by Cora with 19 digs and Robles with 17 digs.
 
The Mountaineers are ranked #2 in the Collegiate Conference of the South with a 7-1 record and an overall record of 14-5. The volleyball team will be back in action at home this Tuesday, October 11 against conference rival Covenant College at 7:00 pm.
