Women's Basketball Scores Season-High in Home-Opener Against Welch

BEREA, Ky. - The Berea College women's basketball team remains unbeaten after defeating Welch College Flames at home 78-60. With this win, the Mountaineers sit at 7-0, which is the best start to a season through seven games as Berea had started 5-2 through the first seven contests in the past four seasons.
 
In their first win at home, freshmen LynKaylah James delivered an outstanding performance as she propelled past the Flames scoring a career-high 19 points and nine rebounds.  Senior Destiny Combs recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Aaliyah Hampton added 14 points, five assists and three steals, while sophomore Jayden Merriweather notched eight rebounds, four assists and a block.
 
The Mountaineers dominated the game as they won the scoring battle in three quarters including a 23-9 deferential in the first. The scoring output led to Berea's season high in points scored, while also being the fifth straight contest scoring at least 71 points. The Mountaineers finished with 50 points in the paint and forcing the Flames into 22 turnovers.
 
After a short trip home, the Mountaineers return to the road to compete in the Jamie L. Roberts Tournament in Washington D.C. Berea takes on Widener University on Monday, December 19th at 4 p.m.
