BEREA, Ky. – Freshman guard
Trey Minter scored a career-high 43 points, but the Berea College men's basketball team came up just short as they fell 88-86 to Huntingdon College on Saturday evening.
With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 6-15 overall and 2-8 in conference play. The Hawks improve to 7-14 and 1-9 in USA South Conference play.
In his scoring efforts, Minter knocked down a career-high seven three-pointers while also recording a career-high four assists and a season-high five rebounds. The Mountaineers had three additional players finish the evening in double-figures with junior guard
Isaac Caudill (13), freshman guard
Marquis Mackey (13), and freshman guard
Kevion Hudson (11) all chipping in.
Minter got his evening started quickly as he knocked down a pair of three-pointers and a floater to push Berea out in front 12-7 with 13:55 left in the half. The Mountaineers would use this early momentum to outscore the Hawks 21-12 to take a 14-point lead with seven and a half minutes until halftime. Huntingdon began to chip away at the deficit and managed to pull to within six points to trail 41-35 going into intermission.
Coming out of halftime, the Hawks quickly took the lead behind an 8-0 run to start the second half. Minter stopped the bleeding by converting a tough layup plus earning a trip to the free-throw line to give Berea a 44-43 lead with 17:28 left in the contest.
Each side continued to trade scores as neither team could gain a lead greater than four points until a three-pointer by Mackey sparked a 10-0 run to give Berea an eight-point cushion. Berea used this momentum to eventually push the lead to 82-73 with 4:43 left, but the Hawks continued to fight. Huntingdon used an 11-2 run to tie the game with a little over 90 seconds left in the contest.
The Hawks regained the lead late, as Max Gardner knocked down a pair of free throws to put his team out in front. Minter's scoring continued late in the game as he laced a mid-range jump shot with 20 seconds left on the clock to tie- the game. However, the Hawks iced the game when Caleb Tony was fouled with less than a second left in the game, earning a trip to the line where he hit both of his free throws to give Huntingdon an 88-86 win over the Mountaineers.
The Berea College men's basketball team looks to pick up a win tomorrow in their final home game, hosting LaGrange College. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. in the Seabury Main Arena.
