NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – The Berea College tennis team traveled to face Asbury University in their opening match of the 2022 campaign but came out on the wrong end as the men's team fell 8-1 and the women lost 9-0.
Junior
Brandon Ray secured his first win of the season in his singles match, defeating his opponent 6-3 and 6-4.
In doubles, the Mountaineers fell short as the first doubles team consisting of sophomore
Lavar Pharris and Ray lost 8-1. The second doubles team featuring freshman
Bogdan Petric and sophomore
John Whitaker fell 8-0 and the third team that included sophomore
Mike Mecham and sophomore
Jordan Peterson lost 8-3.
Peterson had a notable performance in his singles match as he took his foe to three sets as he won the first set 6-4 but surrendered the remaining sets 6-4 and 10-5.
On the women's side, the struggles continued as doubles teams featuring senior
Jaden Johnson and freshman
Ruth Ramos, senior
Agnes Dotse and senior
Emma Lee Nelson, and senior
Stephanie Itumba and junior
CJ Verbeck all fell 8-0.
The Berea College men's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, March 5 as they host Franklin College at the Wilson Evans Tennis Complex. The women's tennis team's next match is on Saturday, March 12 as they travel to Huntingdon College to begin USA South Conference play.
