Softball Sweeps Conference Foe Brevard on Senior Day

BEREA, Ky. – The Berea College softball team secured a pair of wins against Brevard College 3-2 and 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The wins snap the Mountaineers' losing streak, while their record on the year improves to 12-17 overall and 5-9 in USA South Athletic Conference play.

The Mountaineers won their first game against the Tornadoes 3-2. Brevard scored two runs within the first two innings. The Mountaineers held the Tornadoes to 2-0 for three more innings.

Berea finally answered back in the fifth inning with senior Juliann Kirby stealing home bringing the score to 2-1. In the sixth inning freshman Madison Yates throttled the Mountaineers to victory with an RBI single scoring seniors Caroline Nelson and Ashley Spencer.

Nelson was the winning pitcher for the Mountaineers with 2 strikeouts and 5 scoreless innings.

The Mountaineers took game 2 against the Tornadoes with a final score of 4-1. The Mountaineer offense stayed hot, scoring four runs within the first four innings with an RBI double from Kirby and an RBI from freshman Hayleigh Gnagie. The Tornadoes scored 1 run in the sixth inning bringing the final score to 4-1.

Freshman Madison McIntosh earned the win in the circle for the Mountaineers with 14 strikeouts and 6 scoreless innings.

The Mountaineers return to the diamond on Tuesday as they host Miami University-Hamilton. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the Berea College Sports Complex.
