BEREA, Ky. – The Berea College softball team left 11 runners on base over two games as they fell 7-4 and 5-0 to Huntingdon College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers drop to 9-14 on the season while holding a 2-6 conference record and the Hawks improve to 18-6 and 5-1 in conference play.
Game One Huntingdon 7, Berea 4
The beginning of the contest was quiet as neither team was able to score a run through the first three innings. The Hawks opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, notching two runs with an RBI double and RBI single to jump ahead. Berea cut the deceit in half in the bottom of the fourth as freshman
Autumn Adams hit an RBI single to score fellow freshman
Hayleigh Gnagie to trail 2-1.
The Hawks expanded their lead over the next two and a half innings, outscoring the Mountaineers 5-0 to hold a 7-1 lead into the final inning. Berea managed to pull closer in the bottom of the seventh as Gnagie grounded out to the pitcher but scored freshman
Madison Yates to pull to within five runs. Freshman
Madison McIntosh recorded a two-RBI single to bring Berea even closer, but there weren't enough outs remaining as the Mountaineers fell 7-4 in the first game of the afternoon.
McIntosh received the loss on the mound for Berea as she tossed seven innings where she faced 36 batters and struck out six.
Game Two Huntingdon 5, Berea 0
The Mountaineers struggled in game two of the afternoon as they totaled just three hits. The hitting woes didn't affect the opposition, however, as the Hawks recorded 11 in the contest. Huntingdon took the lead out of the gate with a groundout RBI in the top of the first to take a 1-0 advantage. The bats remained hot for the Hawks as they scored four runs over the remaining innings to round out the series with a 5-0 win over Berea.
The Berea College softball team wraps up their home stint on Tuesday as they host Covenant College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Berea College Sports Complex.
