Baseball Faces Offensive Woes Against Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. – The Berea College baseball team dropped their three-game series against Brevard College falling 11-5 in game one and 14-2 in game two on Saturday and dropping game three x-x on Sunday.

With the losses, the Mountaineers fall to 4-30 on the season and 1-14 in conference play.

Game One Brevard 11, Berea 5

After a scoreless first inning from both squads, the Mountaineers took a two-run lead in the top of the second as Justin Brown recorded a two-RBI single to put Berea out in front. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Tornadoes registered three runs when it was their turn to bat as a runner was walked into home plate, along with an RBI single and a runner stealing home plate gave Brevard a 3-2 advantage.

The Tornadoes extended their lead in the bottom of the third inning with an additional two runs on a two-RBI single to left field to jump out in front 5-2. Berea chipped into the deficit in the top of the fourth inning as Daniel Nieto grounded out to second base but was enough to bring home Kire Tribble and Brown notched his third RBI of the contest with a single to the shortstop to bring the contest 5-4.

The contest completely shifted in the favor of Brevard in the bottom of the sixth inning as they totaled five runs to grow a commanding lead. The Tornadoes notched another run in the bottom of the eighth inning and came away with an 11-4 win over the Mountaineers in game one of the three-game series.

Game Two Brevard 14, Berea 2

In game two of Saturday's doubleheader, offense was hard to come by for the Mountaineers as they recorded six hits. The Tornadoes held a 6-0 lead before Berea was able to bring a runner across home plate. The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning as Michael Vazquez hit a home run through right field. Jamie Nunez followed with an RBI single to right field to bring in the second run for the Mountaineers. Brevard scored an additional eight runs to end the contest with a final score of 14-2.

Game Three Brevard 14, Berea 1

The offensive struggles continued for the Mountaineers as they collected just one hit in game three of the series. The lone run was scored in the top of the first inning was Brown scored on a balk. The offensive woes didn't affect the home team, however, as the Tornadoes totaled 12 hits to come away with a 14-1 win to complete the series.

The Berea College baseball team looks to bounce back on Tuesday as they return home to host Alice Lloyd College. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Berea College Sports Complex.
