Baseball Falls in Weekday Contest Against Wilmington

BEREA, Ky. – After the original contest changed dates and locations due to weather conflict, the Berea College baseball team fell to Wilmington College 15-4 in seven innings on Thursday evening.

The Mountaineers recorded seven hits this evening with freshmen Zion Clay and Andrew Dailey totaling two hits apiece. Fellow freshmen Daniel Nieto, Jamie Nunez, and Clay all recorded an RBI in the contest.

Freshman Christian Ortiz started on the mound for Berea, pitching four total innings as he surrendered eight hits and struck out four batters.

After the Quakers were held scoreless at the top of the first inning, the Mountaineers took a 3-0 lead as Nieto brought Dailey home with an RBI single, Clay scored Nieto on a triple, and Clay recorded a run on an error by Wilmington's shortstop to hold an advantage over the opposition early.

The Quakers weren't kept quiet for long as they scored the next six runs of the match to take an 8-3 lead in the fifth inning. Nunez cut into the deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run as the Mountaineers trailed 8-4. Though Berea cut the deficit to half, Wilmington's offense was too much as the Quakers scored seven runs in the sixth inning to walk away with a 15-4 win over the Mountaineers.

The Berea College baseball team resumes conference play this weekend when they travel to face Maryville College on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. on Saturday in Maryville, Tenn.
