ANDERSON, Ind. – The Berea College had an electrifying start to their season as senior Max Jr. netted to lone goal of the contest to lead the Mountaineers to a 1-0 win over Anderson University on Thursday evening.

The Ravens controlled the match for the first 10 minutes, outshooting the Mountaineers three to two. Anderson threatened to take the early lead with a pair of shots in the 13th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Eris Acosta had great back-to-back saves to keep the match scoreless.

Acosta's saves translated into offense for Berea as senior Junior Gyamfi pushed the pace and knocked the pass to Max to put the Mountaineers ahead 1-0 in the 14th minute. Berea attempted to double their advantage in the 20th minute as junior Emiliano Torres-Vera fired a shot that was saved by Anderson's keeper and the Mountaineers took a goal lead into halftime.

In the second half, both teams combined for 13 shots, but none found the back of the net. Before the end of the contest, a pair of yellow cards were awarded in the final five minutes as Anderson's Stephen Fite and Max Jr. received their yellow cards in the 86th and 89th minutes, respectively.

The Berea College men's soccer team has a short turnaround as they battle Earlham College tomorrow in Richmond, Ind. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
