MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Berea College women's basketball team continues to roll through conference play, defeating the Maryville College Scots 85-59 on Saturday afternoon.
The win puts the Mountaineers at 17-1 on the season and 9-0 in CCS contests, while also extending their winning streak to seven games.
Several Mountaineers had career performances as sophomore
Jayden Merriweather hit a career-high six three-pointers to lead the team with 21 points. Freshman
Madison Howell recorded a career-high 12 points with four makes from beyond the arc, sophomore
Dailyn Spalding notched a career-high seven assists, and freshman
LynKaylah James grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds. As a team, Berea shot 12 of 24 from behind the arc and corralled 39 rebounds.
The Mountaineers had a good defensive performance as they forced the Scots to just 26 percent shooting from the floor. The first quarter was a tight contest as Berea trailed by one point at the end. It was the second quarter where the Mountaineers took control of the contest, outscoring Maryville 25-8 to take a 41-25 lead into halftime.
Howell connected a pass to senior
Destiny Combs to score the first points of the second quarter and giving Berea the lead, which they never let up the rest of the way. Back-to-back three-pointers from Howell and Merriweather with 6:32 left in the half pushed the Mountaineers' lead to 10 points and the Scots couldn't bring the contest back to single digits as Berea came away with an 85-59 win and their ninth conference victory.
The Berea College women's basketball team look to keep their winning streak alive on Wednesday hosting Covenant College. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Seabury Center.
