BEREA, Ky. – The Berea College women's basketball team showcased a balanced scoring output with four players in double-digits in scoring as the Mountaineers downed the Agnes Scott Scotties 74-33 on Tuesday evening.
The Mountaineers improve to 11-1 overall and 3-0 in CCS play.
Junior
Aaliyah Hampton finished with a game-high 18 points (9-10 FT), game-high nine rebounds, and three steals. Freshman
Madison Howell notched a career-high 12 points (4-7 overall, 2-5 3PT) along with four rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench. Sophomores
Drea Satori and
Dailyn Spalding rounded out the double-digit performers with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Berea was in control of the contest out of the gate, taking the lead with a 9-0 run. The Mountaineers impressive quarter continued as they shot 10 for 20 overall in the quarter to take a 23-6 lead into the second quarter. As impressive as they were on the offensive side, defensively the Mountaineers were just as active forcing the Scotties to shoot three for 13 overall and 10 first-quarter turnovers.
In the second quarter, the Mountaineers cooled a bit, shooting just 26.7 percent in the second 10 minutes. While they struggled to finish their shots, defensively they were still a problem as Agnes Scott scored just five points in the second quarter as Berea took a 35-11 advantage to the halftime break.
The story of the second half was much like the first as Berea continued to control the game. The Mountaineers shot 43 percent from the field in the second half while outscoring the Scotties 39-22. Berea won the rebounding battle 47-39 while holding Agnes Scott to just two fastbreak points.
The Berea College women's basketball team returns to action on Friday when they host CCS opponent Belhaven University. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Seabury Center.
