Demorest, GA – Facing a 2-0 deficit going into the third set, the Mountaineers battled back to stun the Piedmont Lions 3-2 at the Cave Arena on Tuesday night.
The Mountaineers dropped the first two sets 26-24 and 25-14, giving Piedmont 2-0 lead. Berea regrouped to make an incredible bounce back to dominant the third set to 25-18. Continuing the momentum, the Mountaineers claimed the fourth set 25-15 before finishing off Piedmont 15-8.
Idymel Ayala Rivera (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) recorded a stellar 36 assists during Tuesday's contest.
Hannah Martin (Berea, KY) powered the Mountaineer offense with 11 kills and leading the team in having 3 blocks.
Alexis McCullough (Pikeville, TN) chipped in 10 kills for the Mountaineers.
Defensively,
Deanna De La Torre (Georgetown, TX) and
Amelie Cora (Rio Grande, Puerto Rico) combined for 38 digs in the victory. De La Torre also led the Mountaineers alongside teammate McCullough with 4 aces together.
This Quarterfinal win advances the Mountaineers (16-16) to the CSS semifinals on Friday at 6:30PM at Lookout Mountain, Georgia against Covenant.
