BEREA, KY. - Mountaineers gives home crowd a spectacle as they come from behind to defeat Asbury 71-69.
The start to the game, was not what the Mountaineers were hoping for, as they would fall behind 15-8 to the Asbury Eagles, Berea College looked to
Kevion Hudson to give them a spark following his strong layup to make the score 15-10. The Eagles continued to build momentum however, increasing their lead to 22-10.
Demetris Phillips would strike back-to-back, decreasing the deficit to 25-14. A turnover would lead to the biggest lead for the Eagles, making Berea College down 31-18 with 10:17 left in the first half.
Marquis Mackey,
Kevion Hudson and
Bryce Riley would all put in tough contested layups to start a comeback. After a timeout with one minute left,
Marquis Mackey would put in another 2 pointer to make the score 43-34 before an
Asbury three pointer would make the half time score 46-34.
Berea College, after halftime, turned up the heat.
Jae'dyn Gist would put in a contested layup changing the score to 46-40. Gist would also draw a foul and put in both free throws with 14:53 left.
Tyler Moss would follow and sink an open 3 pointer to put the pressure on the Eagles as their lead shrinks to 3 points. Gist again would draw a foul and make both free throws pulling Berea within one with the score now 53-52.
Trey Minter would pull another three pointer to take the lead as
Asbury now trailed 59-57. Mackey would himself draw two fouls and make both free throws with 8:24 remaining in the game to put Berea up by 6 points.
Trey Minter would ultimately score the last points for the Mountaineers with 4:50 left in the game as both Berea and
Asbury struggled to score in the final stretch.
Asbury would fall to Berea College by a score of 71-69 as Berea handed the Eagles their second straight loss on the season.
Berea shot 30-55 but struggled from behind the arc, only making 2-16. Berea also collected 30 defensive rebounds with
Ja'Rel Montgomery,
Andrew Jones,
Tyler Moss and
Bryce Riley all collecting 3 defensive rebounds. Though only three steals, Berea controlled the skies with 6 blocked shots compared to the Eagles one.
Trey Minter led the team in points (15) and Riley led in assists (5).
Berea is scheduled to play Manchester University in Indiana on December 16th at 5:00 P.M. where the look to improve on their .500 record.
