JACKSON, Miss. – The Berea College men's basketball team secured a big win over Belhaven University 69-58 on Saturday night.
The Mountaineers finish the regular season 15-10 overall and 7-5 in CCS contests. The win locks the Mountaineers as the number four overall seed in the CCS conference tournament, thus hosting their first-round matchup.
Berea had five players finish the night scoring double digits, as senior
Isaac Caudill led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore
Trey Minter hit four shots from beyond the arc to notch 12 points, while freshman
Bryce Riley also scored 12 points while shooting 45.5% from the field. Sophomore
Jarel Montgomery corralled four rebounds to go with 11 points and junior
Kevion Hudson added four boards and 10 points of his own.
The Mountaineers never trailed in the contest, as they took a 5-0 lead out of the gates when Caudill knocked down a midrange jumper and Minter followed with a three-pointer. The Blazers pulled to within one point, but Berea found their momentum to hold a 17-8 lead with 13:14 left in the half.
Riley's second three-pointer expanded Berea's lead 20-8, however, Belhaven responded with back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to trail by just six points with a little over 11 minutes left in the half. The Blazers pulled to within five points, but Berea converted enough on offense to take a 39-32 lead into halftime. The Mountaineers shot 15-for-34 overall and 6-for-14 from the three-pointer line in the first half.
Montgomery started the second half hot, scoring the first five points for Berea with a three-pointer and a midrange jumper to give the Mountaineers a nine-point advantage. Minter quickly followed with a make from beyond the arc, but Belhaven notched a three-pointer of their own as they trailed 47-38 with 16:37 left on the clock.
The Blazers continued to fight, pulling to within seven points with 3:03 left. However, a layup by Montgomery and excellent free throw shooting by Hudson (4-for44 in the final three minutes) was enough for Berea to come away with their ninth road win of the season.
The Mountaineers turn their sights toward the postseason as they host the number five seed Piedmont University Lions in the first round of the CCS conference tournament on Tuesday. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in the Seabury Center.
