Women’s Basketball Defeats Agnes Scott to Advance to CCS Semifinals

BEREA, Ky. – The Berea College women's basketball team punched their ticket to the semifinals of the CCs conference tournament, defeating the Agnes Scott College Scotties 65-52 on Wednesday evening in the Seabury Center.

The win pushes the Mountaineers to 24-2 overall.

The Mountaineers were led by freshman Joyce Mukalamusi who scored a career-high 14 points (6-for-7 overall) and grabbed four rebounds. Sophomore Drea Satori and freshman LynKaylah James notched 11 points and junior Aaliyah Hampton scored 10. As a team, Berea outrebounded the Scotties 42 to 26 and forced 19 turnovers.

Berea jumped out to a 4-0 lead as James converted her first two layup attempts, however, Agnes Scott responded with an 8-0 run to hold a small lead with 6:11 left in the first quarter. After James' third layup of the quarter, freshman Madison Howell knocked down a three-pointer to put the Mountaineers back in front 9-8. Junior Kauri McKeithen gave the Mountaineers a 15-13 lead going into the second quarter with an offensive putback as Berea shot seven-for-17 in the first.

In the second quarter Berea's defense stepped up, holding the Scotties to just three points. Agnes Scott shot one-for-10 in the quarter, however, the Mountaineers also struggled converting shots hitting just 29.4% of their attempts. Though Berea struggled from the field, they converted their free throw attempts, going five-for-five form the charity stripe to take an 80-55 lead into halftime.

The Scotties got hot in the fourth quarter, shooting an efficient 70.6% from the field and outscoring Berea 26-20. Despite Agnes Scott's hot shooting, the damage from the second quarter was too much as Berea came away with a 65-52 win in the quarterfinals of the CCs conference tournament.

The Mountaineers continue their postseason campaign on Saturday, hosting Maryville College. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at the Seabury Center.
