BEREA, Ky. -The Berea College Mountaineers and the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan University went head-to-head in a showdown on Thursday evening. It was a scoring frenzy as both teams battled it out on the field, with a total of 31 runs scored as the Bishops ultimately claiming a 21-10 victory over the Mountaineers.
The Mountaineers fall to 3-13 on the year after the loss.
Sophomore
Nick McLaughlin led the way for Berea as he finished the evening two-for-two with three RBIs. Sophomore
Jayden Junta notched two RBIs of his own and fellow sophomores
Justin Brown,
Marcelo Manrique, and
Fredison Rivera all recorded one RBI. The Mountaineers recorded 10 hits as a team.
Ohio Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-0 lead to start the game, putting up one run in the top of the first and three in the top of the second. The Mountaineers didn't stay down for long though, scoring four runs in their turn to bat in the second inning.
With the bases loaded, Brown began the scoring with an RBI single to score sophomore
Jamie Nunez. The runs started to pour in as Rivera earned his way on base with a walk scoring McLaughin, sophomore
Michael Vazquez hit an RBI single to bring sophomore
Lawrence Griffey home, and Manrique recorded his RBI as Berea tied the contest 4-4.
The Bishops retook the lead over the next two and a half innings, outscoring Berea 5-0 and holding a 9-4 advantage going into the bottom of the fifth. McLaughin chipped into the deficit with a two-RBI single as Berea trailed 9-6 exiting the fifth inning.
Momentum shifted towards the Bishops way in the top of the sixth inning as they took a commanding 17-6 lead by scoring eight runs. The deficit ended up being too substantial for the Mountaineers as both sides scored four additional runs over the final two innings as Berea fell 21-10 to Ohio Wesleyan.
The Mountaineers look to defend their house this weekend as they begin CCS action, hosting LaGrange College on Saturday. Game one of Saturday's doubleheader is set to start at 1 p.m.
