Baseball Suffers Season-Ending Loss in Extra Innings Against Maryville

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Berea College baseball team surrendered a three-run home run in the bottom of the 11th inning as their season came to an end 13-10 against the Maryville College Scots in the first round of the CCS Conference Tournament on Wednesday night.

The Mountaineers finish the season 9-32 overall, increasing their win total a season ago by four games.

Sophomores Jayden Junta and Michael Vazquez led the offense for Berea, with three RBIs each. Sophomore Fredison Rivera finished the night three-for-five with an RBI and scored two runs. As a team, Berea recorded 10 hits and two errors.

Berea held the lead early as they scored six runs over the first two and a half innings. Rivera got the night started with a leadoff single to rightfield. Sophomore Marcelo Manrique put the Mountaineers out in front with a two-run home run to centerfield. The bats continued to be hit as Vazquez followed up with a triple to right field and Junta stepped up to bring his teammate home with a single to rightfield and Berea led 3-0.

Following a three-up-three-down bottom of the first inning for the Scots, Berea put up two additional runs in the top of the second. After two quick outs for the Mountaineers, Rivera knocked his second hit of the night with a double to rightfield. On the following at-bat, Manrique earned a walk, and the bases were quickly loaded as Vazquez was hit by a pitch. Junta once again had a big at-bat, hitting a two-RBI single down the left side to put Berea up on the Scots 5-0.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Mountaineers again made quick work of Maryville with three fast outs to hold the Scots scoreless. In the top of the third inning, sophomore Justin Brown hit a single to centerfield and sophomore AJ Wylie followed with a single of his own as Brown made his way to third base. Brown crossed home plate on a wild pitch as he pushed Berea's lead to six runs exiting the top of the third.

The Scots found momentum over the next inning and a half, outscoring the Mountaineers 5-0 to trail 6-5 entering the fifth inning. In the fifth inning, extended their lead to four runs as sophomore Ricardo Serra got the inning started earning a walk and followed with reaching second base on a passed ball. After two outs, Brown and Wylie both drew walks to have the bases loaded. Rivera came to the plate and knocked an RBI-single to bring home Serra. However, Brown and Wylie both crossed home plate on an error by the Scots as Berea took a 9-5 advantage.

Maryville minimized the damage in the bottom of the fifth with two runs of their own to pull the contest 9-7. After a scoreless sixth inning, Maryville pulled to within one run with an RBI-ground out in the bottom of the seventh. In the bottom of the ninth, Maryville tied the contest with a solo home run to left field as both sides prepared for extra innings.
The Mountaineers notched a run in the top of the 10th inning with Manrique's sacrifice fly out to leftfield, but Maryville responded with an RBI-single in the bottom half of the inning as the contest moved into the 11th frame.

The Scots held Berea scoreless in the top of the 11th inning before they took the game with a walk off three-run home run to leftfield for a 13-10 win over Berea.
