Mountaineers Shine on First Day of CCS Outdoor Championships

Maryville, TN. - With the first day of events at the CCS Outdoor Championships in the books, the Mountaineers have made noise in both the finals, that concluded on Tuesday, as well as in the qualifying rounds of the other events.
 

Six of twenty events have concluded and the Mountaineers stand at a total of 39 points and 63 points, respectively for the men's and women's teams. Outlined below are how the Mountaineers secured said points and athletes that advanced to tomorrow's finals.
 

FINALS HEADLINES
 

ANTECK WINS SECOND STRAIGHT 10,000m TITLE AND FIRST 3000m STEEPLECHASE TITLE

The first running event of the day saw Carah Anteck win her first gold of the competition in the 3,000m steeplechase. Carah ran a courageous race and battled back from 2nd place the last 800 meters, to win her first steeplechase title. Her time of 12:05.53 set a CCS Championship record. She was followed by her teammates Chrystal Cornwell, 3rd and Jasiella Grandy, 5th respectively.

 

Carah followed up her steeplechase title with a win in the 10,000 meter race. Carah won the race by a blazing 65 seconds. Carah was followed by her teammates Erin Chambers, 5th and Jasiella Grandy, 7th.

KEISHA LEWIS WINS LONG JUMP

After finishing 2nd in last year's CCS Championship, in long jump, Keisha Lewis, flew to redemption. Heading into her final jump of prelim, Keisha Lewis stood in 2nd place with a mark of 5.01m/16'05.25". The next attempt secured her gold medal, with a jump 5.18m/17'00". Lewis was joined on the podium by her teammate Ashyia Maddickes who jumped 5.02m/16'05.75. The duo along with Jerneisha Lewis was able to score 17 points for the Mountaineers.

 

IMMELL WINS SECOND STRAIGHT 10,000m TITLE

Immell won his 2nd straight 10,000m title battling to win by 10 seconds over 2nd place. Immell was in second place for most of the race. With 2,000 meters to go, Immell made a charge and never looked back. The title gave Immell his 2nd straight CCS 10,000 meter title.

 

MADDICKES SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS   

In her first CCS Championship meet, the newcomer made herself at home in the women's high jump. Ashyia Maddickes, cleared a new personal best of 1.55m/5'1" to take 3rd place on the podium.

FAIR, GIBBSON, BRANCH, WILSON, BELL

The men had a great day 1 in the field events. Larry Branch and Caleb Wilson, both scored points in the men's long jump, taking 8 points between the two of them.

 

Branch then proceeded to help Silas Fair and Quinncey Gibson score 10 points in men's high jump.

Alyssa Bell, finished her collegiate season in javelin by throwing 26.39m/86'07" and taking 5th place.

 

SMITH TAKES BRONZE

DeMarcus Smith, ended day 1 by putting on a show. DeMarcus battled and threw his way into the history books by securing 3rd place in the men's javelin, throwing 45.88m/150'6".

 

SEMIFINALS HIGHLIGHTS

100m AND 200m

Two women qualified for the 100 meter and 200 meter. Kymiah Blair and Jaleesa Herman, both qualified for the 100 meter final, while Blair and Ashyia Maddickes qualified for the 200 meter final.

Christoff Mendy qualified for the men's 200 meter and will contest the final tomorrow.

 

MEN'S 400m AND 800m QUALIFY 4 EACH

The men made some magic and qualified four runners each in the 400 meter and 800 meter.  Jeffrey Ozor, Gloire Muzeba, Christoff Mendy, and Larry Branch qualified for the 400m final.

The 800 meter followed suit by qualifying four of their own in the 800 meter run. Jonathon Bolanos, Silas Fair, Gloire Muzeba, and Austin Gatewood, all qualified for the final with gutsy runs.

 

WOMEN'S 400m AND 800m QUALIFY 5 EACH

The women showed out in the semifinals of the 400 meter quintet of Kymiah Blair, Ashyia Maddickes, Kristin Fischli, Katerina Kovalevskaya, and Liberte Mack all qualified for the 400 meter final on Wednesday.

Not be outdone, the 800 meter women proceeded to qualify their own quintet in the 800 meter with Madison Stonestreet, Kristin Fischli, Muhorakeye Joyeuse, Peyton Potts, and Liberte Mack.

 

MEN'S 400m HURDLES

The trio of Quinncey Gibson, Larry Branch, and Robert Russell all punched their tickets to the 400 meter hurdle final on Wednesday.
