Before traveling to Turkey, Josie had never been on an airplane. Two weeks later, she had presented an international marketing proposal, made friends she still keeps in touch with, and experienced a different culture alongside one of her teammates.
Josie had always wanted to travel the world. When she learned that Berea College could help fund part of a study abroad trip, she saw an opportunity to begin.
During the two-week program, Josie took BUS 324, International Marketing. Her class worked on a project exploring which American business they would introduce to Turkey and how they would adapt it for a new market.
Josie and her partner chose Cook Out. They believed the restaurant's affordability, convenience, and late-night service could appeal to customers in a culture where people often stay out late.
Their presentation received an enthusiastic response from Turkish students. Feedback also prompted them to consider a diner-style setting and changes to the food to better suit local tastes. The project gave Josie a practical opportunity to think through how a familiar business might operate in another country.
Some of her favorite moments came from meeting and attending class with students at Izmir University of Economics. Sharing experiences helped them learn about one another's lives, and several of those connections continued after the trip ended.
Josie also traveled with her teammate Maya Meads. Having someone she already knew alongside her made the unfamiliar experience even more special.
"We were able to make memories together, experience new things, and grow as individuals," Josie said.
For Josie, the trip became one of her most memorable experiences at Berea. It brought together her interest in travel, learning beyond campus, and the chance to build friendships across cultures.
"It was an opportunity to challenge myself, learn outside the classroom, and create memories that I will carry with me for the rest of my life," she reflected.
