Mountaineers Take Fifth at Mike and Mary Johnson Classic

BEREA, Ky. — The Berea College women's cross country team competed on its home course Saturday at the Mike and Mary Johnson Classic, finishing fifth out of seven teams with 145 points.

The Mountaineers were led by freshman Gwenizah Barcinas, who finished 19th overall in the women's 5K with a time of 21:56.5. Barcinas averaged 7:03.7 per mile and finished as Berea's top runner for the second consecutive meet after leading the team at the season-opening Hanover Invitational.

E. Chambers followed in 29th place with a time of 22:37.5, giving Berea two runners inside the top 30.

Erika Maldonado finished 53rd in 26:33.2, followed by Remas Tutu in 54th at 26:54.2. Shyanne Powell rounded out Berea's five scoring runners, placing 55th in 27:08.8.

Abi Rice also competed for the Mountaineers, finishing 57th overall with a time of 27:32.2.

As a team, Berea finished fifth with 145 points, placing ahead of Alice Lloyd (172) and Kentucky State (180). Centre won the team competition with 25 points, followed by Asbury with 43 and Maryville with 76.

The Mountaineers will return to competition Friday, Oct. 3, at the Swag Louisville Cross Country Classic in Louisville.
