Byron Wimphrie was named Head Coach of the Berea College women’s basketball program in June 2026, bringing more than 20 years of coaching experience and a proven track record of developing championship-caliber programs.
Prior to arriving at Berea, Wimphrie served as the Head Girls' Basketball Coach at Walhalla High School in South Carolina, where he led the Razorbacks to back-to-back South Carolina state championships—including the first girls' basketball state title in school history—along with multiple region championships and deep postseason runs. His success at Walhalla earned him the 2025–26 South Carolina State Coach of the Year award, alongside multiple Region Coach of the Year honors, while mentoring numerous All-State and All-Region student-athletes.
Wimphrie’s extensive coaching background includes collegiate stops at Charleston Southern University (NCAA Division I) and Southern Wesleyan University (NCAA Division II), in addition to decades of high school leadership. Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for strong player development, strategic recruiting, and cultivating a program culture centered on character, academic excellence, and personal growth.
A former collegiate point guard, Wimphrie played at Charleston Southern before completing his career at Southern Wesleyan University from 2006 to 2009. He earned a B.S. in Physical Education from Southern Wesleyan in 2009, an M.S. in Psychology with a concentration in Leadership Development from Walden University in 2013, and an Ed.S. in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University in 2021. Wimphrie is also the author of Battle Tested Coach, a book focused on leadership, coaching philosophy, and overcoming adversity.
Byron and his wife, Brittany, have four children: Elynn, Banks, Townes, and Oakie.
