Jesse Massucco continues his offensive barrage leading the Blue Crew with two goals in road win.
The third time was truly the charm for the Berea College men's soccer team on Sunday. In their third foray into NCAA Division III competition, the Mountaineers traveled to Cincinnati for a match up with Mt. St. Joseph University and this time they walked away winners, taking the contest 3-1.
The offense picked up right where it left off after Thursday's thrashing of Crown College, when junior midfielder Jesse Massucco got behind the defense and took a pass from freshman defenseman Joshua Bowman and made it count scoring the team's first goal a little more than 14 minutes into the contest. That goal would be the only one scored in the first half for either team.
The second half got off to a very physical start with both teams trading fouls, including one that resulted in a yellow card on Storie Ratcliff and gave the hosts a penalty kick. Chris Kaylor made that PK count for MSJ, but it would be their last of the day as the card and PK seemed to inspire the Blue Crew defense and push them to another level.
Massucco shook free of the MSJ defense late in the half and beat goalkeeper Jonathan Hurley for the winning goal and his second of the day. Freshman defender Chris Gaughan decided to add a little more fuel to the fire netting a great pass from fellow defender Million Beshah with just seven seconds remaining on the clock.
It was the second win in a row for freshman goalie Garrison Wagner, who gave up the one goal, while making five saves on 19 shots.
Berea will be returning to southern Ohio on Wednesday night when they take on former KIAC rival Cincinnati Christian at 8:00 pm
