Mountaineers Stifle Johnson University 70-54

Box Score

The Berea College Mountaineers overwhelmed the Royals of Johnson University tonight in the Seabury Center 70-54.  The Mountaineers used their speed and defense to frustrate the Royals throughout the first half.  The Blue Crew defense forced 14 Royal turnovers and grabbed another seven steals to lead 45-26 at intermission.  Senior Tevin Webster led the way offensively scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds.  None of his 15 points were sweeter than his second bucket, a turn-around jumper from low box.  It was that basket which gave Webster 1,001 points in his Berea College career.

The second half was more of the same, full court pressure and a bevy of long-distance attempts by Berea.  The later was the only weakness for BC, as they went 0-12 from behind the arc in the second half (3-23 .130 for the game).  However their defense was more than enough to keep the Royals in check as they forced a total of 21 turnovers on the night, and converted those into 27 Blue Crew points.

2013-14 All-KIAC (Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) team member and "Newcomer of the Year", Daishon Robinson triumphantly returned to the floor after missing the first eight contests with a broken hand.  Robinson was Berea's second leading scorer with 13 points in his 23 minutes of play.  But the night belong to Webster.  He finished the game with 21 points, eight rebounds and was force defensively down low holding Johnson two leading scorers below their average.

The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, January 10 at 3:00 pm when they host Wilberforce University.  The Berea College women's game versus Wilberforce will precede the men with a 1:00 pm tip-off.
