Mountaineers fall to Scots in Season Opener

LOOKOUT MT., GA. – The Mountaineers playing their 1st game of the season fell to Covenant College 83-39. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mountaineers entered the game with only 7 players, only two players returning from the 2019-2020 season (MJ Embree, Tyler Boggs). The young Mountaineers trailed the Scots for the majority of the game, but every Mountaineer was able to score a point.

The Mountaineers were led by Senior MJ Embree (Buffalo, KY), who had 11 points and 3 steals. Embree was 4-10 from the field, also going 1-2 on his free throw attempts. Behind Embree was freshman Trae Minter (Louisville, KY), who had 6 points, 3 assists, and 3 rebounds. Freshman Aaron Leake also added 5 points and 2 steals. Sophomore Tyler Boggs in his first career start for the Mountaineers led the team with 6 rebounds and added 4 points.

The Covenant Scots were led by Zach Allen who had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Allen shot 7-14 from the field. Brady Palmer also added 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists for the Scots.

The Mountaineers shot 27.8% from the field, 14.3% from beyond the arc and 42.9% from the free throw line. The Mountaineers out-stole the ball from the Scots 11-8.

Up next, the Mountaineers will play at Covenant College (Jan. 25), for their second game of the conference double-header against the Scots. Tipoff is slated for 3:00 pm.
