LOOKOUT MT., GA. – The Mountaineers fell to Covenant College 96-61 to wrap up the season series with the Scots. The young Mountaineers improved from their first appearance on the court since March of 2020, scoring 61 points led by Freshman Trey Minter (Louisville, KY). Covenant was able to shoot over 60% from the field and a remarkable 58.6% from beyond the arc.
The Mountaineers were led by Freshman Trey Minter (Louisville, KY), who had a career high 23 points and 4 steals. Minter was 5-18 from the field, also going 3-8 on from beyond the arc. After getting his legs under him in the debut on Saturday, Minter looked more comfortable and willing to attack the basket when the opportunity opened itself, evidenced by the increase of 17 points from game 1 to game 2. Behind Minter was senior MJ Embree (Buffalo, KY), who had 14 points and 3 rebounds. Freshman Jarel Montgomery also added 11 points and 3 steals. 5 Mountaineers logged 3 boards each in the game.
The Covenant Scots were led by Brady Palmer who had 17 points and 4 rebounds. Palmer shot 6-8 from the field, going 5-7 from beyond the arc. Zack Allen also added 15 points. The Scot's scoring was a team effort, having 6 players with double digits in points.
The Mountaineers shot 34% from the field, 31.6% from beyond the arc and 76%% from the free throw line. The Mountaineers drastically improved in almost every offensive statistic from the previous game. The Mountaineers out-stole the ball from the Scots 9-6.
Up next, the Mountaineers will play at LaGrange College (Jan. 30 & Jan. 31), for their 2nd series of the season. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 PM for both games at LaGrange.
