LAGRANGE, GA. – The Mountaineers fell to LaGrange College 89-73 to open up the season series with the Panthers. The young Mountaineers again improved from their previous offensive production on the court, scoring 73 points led by Freshman Trey Minter (Louisville, KY). This was a drastic difference from the sub-40 point season opener a weekend ago.
The Mountaineers were led by Freshman Trey Minter (Louisville, KY), who had a team high 20 points and 3 rebounds. Minter was 6-16 from the field, also going 2-6 on from beyond the arc. Minter looks to be the offensive focal point of this year's offense after losing the top 3 leading scorers for the Mountaineers due to COVID-19 concerns. Minter led the game in free throws taken and was 100% from the charity stripe going 6-6. Behind Minter was senior Terique Miller (Richmond, KY), who opened his first game of the season scoring 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Miller shot 4-12 from the field and 3-9 from beyond the arc. M.J. Embree (Buffalo, KY), also scored 13 points for the Mountaineers, shooting 50% from the field, including 2-4 from beyond the arc. DeAndrae Lightfoot and Dylan Webb both scored 10 points for the Mountaineers.
The LaGrange Panthers were led by Julian Cameron who scored a game-high 28 points and 6 assists. Cameron shot 10-17 from the field, going 4-10 from beyond the arc. Drew Shepherd also added 18 points, shooting 6-10 from the field and 3-5 from beyond the arc. The Panthers shot fantastic beyond the arc, shooting 10-24, 41.7%.
The Mountaineers were more efficient again, and improving from their previous game totals, shooting 44.3% from the field, and 33.3% from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers converted 11-16 free throws (68.8%). The Mountaineers scored as a team, shown by 5 players having 10 or more points in the game.
Up next, the Mountaineers will play at LaGrange College for their 2nd game of the two game series. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
