Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Downs Piedmont on the Road

Demorest, GA – Sophomore Destiny Combs (Louisville, KY) hit the game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds remaining as the Berea College women's basketball team survived a second-half comeback to defeat the Piedmont Lions 64-62 Saturday afternoon.

Berea scored 23 points in the opening quarter of play and built a nine-point lead after the first.  The Mountaineers extended to a 15-point advantage late in the third quarter before Piedmont stormed back on their home floor.  Down three with just 26 seconds in the game, Lion freshman Nae-Nae Eades knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 62-62.  Sophomore Aaliyah Hampton (Hopkinsville, KY) drove down the lane and dished to Combs who corralled the pass and put the game-winner through with 1.7 seconds on the clock.  Piedmont's three-point attempt from the top of the key missed the mark as time expired.

Hampton led all scorers with 18 points and nine rebounds.  Combs and freshman Dailyn Spalding (Lebanon, KY) added 12 points each and senior Bailee Vanover (Richmond, KY) also scored in double-figures with 10 points and dished out five assists.  Senior Destanie Love (Bardstown, KY) grabbed eight boards for the Mountaineers, who shot 42% from the floor and forced 19 turnovers.

With the win, Berea (8-3, 4-0) stays unbeaten in USA South conference play, including key conference road wins at Maryville and now Piedmont.  The Mountaineers will return home to close out play in the first semester when they host Spalding University on Monday at 5:00 PM.
