DEMOREST, GA. – The Mountaineers fell to Piedmont College 94-65 to open up the season series with the Lions. After a two week lay-off due to the previous weekend games being canceled because of USA South's COVID-19 protocols, Freshman Trey Minter (Louisville, KY) returned to action with vengeance, scoring a season-high 34 points in the game.
The Mountaineers were led by Freshman Trey Minter (Louisville, KY), who had a season high 34 points. Minter was 11-17 from the field, also going 5-8 on from beyond the arc. Minter continues to be the focal point of the Mountaineers offense this season. Minter scored the first 13-points of the game for the Mountaineers and had 21 points halfway through the 1st half. Behind Minter was senior M.J. Embree who scored 12-points and added 7 rebounds. Freshman Jarel Montgomery also added 9-points for the Mountaineers.
The Piedmont College Lions were led by Ryan Jolly, who scored a team-high 18 points and added 6 assists. Jolly shot 7-11 from the field, going 4-4 from the charity stripe. The Lions had 13 players on the team who scored in the game.
The Mountaineers started the game red-hot, led by Trey Minter, leading as late as the 12-minute mark of the game. However, once the Lions shut down Trey Minter, the Lions went on a 21-2 run to end the 1st half. Minter was still the star of the game even with the loss, scoring 34-points in just 24 minutes on the floor.
Up next, the Mountaineers will play at Piedmont College for their 2nd game of the two game series. Tipoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
