CHATANOOGA, TN. - Berea women's soccer team traveled to University of Tennessee-Chattanooga's Sports Complex for a mid-week match up against the Covenant College Scots. The Mountaineers were able to scare the Scots on counterattacks but were not able to score a goal and lost 4-0 on the road.
The Mountaineers offense mostly came through counterattacks in the game. The Scots put heavy pressure on the Mountaineers from the get-go, firing off 13 shots in the opening 30 minutes of the game. After constant pressure, and impressive goalkeeping by Perris Colemon-Harville, registering 6 saves, the Scots were finally able to breakthrough in the 40th minute by a goal from Megan Rasku, assisted by Katie Daick. The Mountaineers entered halftime trailing Covenant 1-0.
The Scots came firing to start the 2nd half. 14 seconds into the half, Kailey Burrell was able to find the back of the net to give the Scots a 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers continued to play hard defense, with the Scots offense putting relentless pressure for most of the half. The Scots were finally able to breakthrough in the 87th minute after numerous attempts to score, thanks to a goal by Abby White assisted by Kailey Burrell. About 30 seconds after White's goal, the Scots were awarded a free kick just outside the box, which the Scots were able to convert into a goal thanks to Leah Marr. The game ended 4-0.
The Mountaineers were unable to do much to scare the Scots after the first half. The Mountaineers were able to record 3 shots, and 3 shots on goal, but after the 12th minute of play, the Mountaineers were unable to register another shot for rest of the game. The Mountaineers defense stood tall, being able to fend off the relentless pressure put on by the Scots, led by Perris Colemon-Harville and center-back Stacy Keruwa. Unfortunately, the Scots were able to capitalize on 4 of their 28 shots (16 shots on goal) and were able to beat the Mountaineers.
Up next, the Mountaineers will host their first home game this season at Madison Southern High School on Saturday, February 27th. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 1 PM.
