Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Mountaineers Drop Home Opener

BEREA, KY.  - Berea women's soccer team hosted their first home game of the season against the Wesleyan College Wolves. The Mountaineers were unable to take home a victory and lost their 4th straight to begin the season. The Mountaineers were able to score two goals, but were unable to stop the Wolves' offensive attack.

The Mountaineers and the Wolves went back and forth on the field to start out the game. Both teams were able to move the ball up the field and were able to fire off some shots to scare the opposing team's backline and the keeper. The Wolves were able to break through first in the game with an Alyssa Key in the 29th minute, assisted by Amber McNeal. Shortly after in the 37th minute, the Mountaineers were able to capitalize on a corner kick, where the Wolves' defense accidently scored an own goal when the ball was trying to get cleared from the box. The Mountaineers unfortunately were not able to hold off the Wolves, as Alyssa Key was again able to score against the Mountaineers in an impressive individual play in the 43rd minute. The half ended with a score of 2-1 for the Wesleyan Wolves.

The Mountaineers came into the 2nd half with relentless offensive pressure. This paid off with a goal from Gabrielle Scott, just outside the box in the 49th minute. However, this would be the end of the Mountaineers scoring for the day, and the Wolves took over the game by solidly holding possession of the ball for majority of the half. The Wolves were able to score on the counterattack with a goal from Nadia Al-Shahabi, assisted by a great run on the wing from Amber Whitten in the 52nd minute. Then in the 75th minute, the Wolves were able to capitalize on a free kick, scored by Thi Soe. The Mountaineers tried to push the ball up for the final 15 minutes of the game to overcome to deficit but were not able to capitalize on any other chances.

The Mountaineers were able to fire off 12 shots, 10 shots on goal, which was a season high but were unable to come out of the game with a win. The Mountaineers played more aggressive this game offensively but were unable to match the firepower from the Wolves.

Up next, the Mountaineers will host their 2nd home game this season at Madison Southern High School on Saturday, March 6th. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 2 PM.
