Hampton, Vanover Lead Women’s Basketball to Victory Over Maryville

BEREA, Ky. – The Berea College women's basketball team win their 10th straight game, defeating Maryville (Tenn.) 64-43 on Wednesday evening.

The Mountaineers hold a perfect record in conference play at 10-0 and a 16-3 overall record. The Scots fall to 7-9 overall and 4-4 in conference action. With the win, Berea remains undefeated at home sitting at 7-0 in the Seabury Center.

Sophomore guard Aaliyah Hampton shot three-for-five from the three-point line to score a game-high 22 points and was active on the defensive end, recording four steals. Senior guard Bailee Vanover knocked down seven free throws, totaling 17 points while grabbing six rebounds. Sophomore forward Destiny Combs had another outstanding performance on the glass, corralling a game-high 15 rebounds to go with her eight points.

Hampton's scoring began quickly as she recorded eight of Berea's first 10 points of the evening. After Hampton hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to open the game, Vanover found a lane to the paint for a jumper to score her first points of the contest. On the ensuing offensive possession, Vanover kicked the ball up to Hampton for a fastbreak layup to score her third basket on the evening to take a 10-4 lead with 5:11 left in the first quarter as Maryville called a timeout to slow the momentum. The Scots continued to fight, drawing the contest to 15-11 at the end of the first as the Mountaineers took a four-point advantage heading into the second stanza.

The Mountaineers found their stride in the second quarter, outscoring the opposition 20-11 over the next 10 minutes. Berea began the second frame like the first as Vanover found Hampton opening behind the three-point line to give the Mountaineers a seven-point lead. Maryville pulled to within three points but a pair of free throws from Hampton and a Vanover jump shot put Berea ahead 22-15 with 5:38 left in the half. The Scots trimmed the deficit to five points, but the Mountaineers extended their lead to double digits to end the half, leading 35-22 going into the break.

Coming out of halftime both sides traded scores as the Scots trimmed their deficit down to 10 points a little over three minutes into the half. The Mountaineers ended Maryville's momentum, going on a 7-0 run to expand the lead to 17 points. Hampton started the run for Berea, finishing a shot in the paint before a three-pointer from freshman guard Jayden Merriweather and a Combs layup gave the Mountaineers a 46-29 advantage. Maryville attempted to climb back into the game, but Berea kept the visiting at bay for the remainder of the contest, coming away with a 64-43 win to stay unbeaten in conference play.

The Berea College women's basketball team continues their season on Saturday, Jan. 29 as they host Brevard College (N.C.). Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. at the Seabury Center.
