DEMOREST, Ga. – The Berea College softball team concluded their 2022 season with a pair of losses to Piedmont University 5-4 and 5-0 on Saturday.
The Mountaineers finish the season with a 13-20 overall record and 5-11 in USA South Athletic Conference play.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the morning's first game through an inning and a half of play. A single to left field by
Hayleigh Gnagie in the first inning was enough to bring
Madison McIntosh home to notch the first run of the contest. McIntosh recorded an RBI single of her own in the second inning with a hit to right field to give the Mountaineers a two-run lead.
The Lions trimmed the lead to one in the bottom of the second before the Mountaineers scored two additional runs over the fourth and fifth innings. McIntosh recorded her second RBI of the contest with another single and
Karlie Harris also recorded an RBI single in the fifth inning to give Berea a 4-1 lead.
However, momentum shifted in the favor of the home team in the bottom of the fifth as a three-run home run through center field tied the contest 4-4. Both sides went scoreless in the sixth inning as eventually, Piedmont took the victory with a sacrifice fly out to right field to score the runner on third base for a 5-4 win.
