MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Berea College baseball team gave up the opening match in their weekend series against Maryville 15-5 on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 4-22 on the season with a 1-9 conference record while the Scotts improve to 18-8 and 4-3 in conference action.
Freshman
Kire Tribble batted 1.000 for Berea as he recorded three hits. Freshmen
Justin Brown,
Marcelo Manrique, and
Ricardo Serra all notched an RBI in the contest.
Trailing 3-0 to start the top of the fourth inning, the Mountaineers cut the deficit to one run as Serra scored the first run for Berea on a wild pitch and Brown hit an RBI single through right field to bring the contest closer. However, when the Scotts took another commanding lead as they scored five runs in their half of the fourth inning to hold a 7-2 advantage.

Jayden Junta soon came across home plate on a wild pitch as Berea trailed 7-4 going into the bottom half of the fifth inning. But the trend continued as in the Scotts half of the inning, four additional runs increased the opposition's lead as they took an 11-4 lead into the sixth inning.
A sacrifice fly out to center field from Manrique gave the Mountaineers another run, but Maryville outscored the Mountaineers 4-1 the rest of the contest as Berea eventually fell 15-5 to the Scotts.
The Berea College baseball team wraps up their series against Maryville tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
