Women’s Volleyball Goes Undefeated in Hanover College Invitational

HANOVER, Ind. -
 
Game 1
 
The Berea College Volleyball team traveled to Hanover, Ind. to play in four matchups in the Hanover College Invitational. The Mountaineers started off strong wining the first game in a 5-set battle against Westminster College (23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 20-25, 15-12)
 
The Mountaineers were led by junior Deanna De La Torre who had an astounding match with 21 kills. Sophomore Idymel Ayala Rivera had a big-time performance with 46 assists to help with the offense and six aces. The Mountaineer defense was led by Senior Fabiana De Jesús with 17 digs.
 
Game 2
 
After the 5-set battle, the Mountaineer were able to keep up their hustle and drive which got them their second win of the night vs Kenyon College in 4 sets (25-21, 16-25, 25-19, 25-19).
 
In a defensive battle, the Mountaineers were able to outhustle the Owls getting 104 digs, compared to 99 from Kenyon. De Jesus had a career high match leading the Mountaineer defense with 34 digs. Senior Carolina Robles notched a double-double with 14 kills and 20 digs and De La Torre helped the Mountaineer offense with 19 kills.
 
Game 3
 
On the second day of the Hanover Invite, the Mountaineers faced the Adrian College Bulldogs. After winning the first two sets (25-20, 25-17), the Berea Mountaineers lost the next two (26-28, 17-25). The Mountaineer showed that they do not let up easily as they were able to dominate the Bulldogs in the fifth set (15-5) earning them their third win of the tournament.
 
De La Torre notched a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs followed by Robles with 13 kills. Ayala Rivera helped the offense with 39 assists and De Jesus led the Mountaineer defense with 24 digs.
 
Game 4
After a long tournament the Mountaineers were able to push through and beat the home team, Hanover College in three straight sets (25-18, 25-18, 25-22).
 
The Mountaineers led the game in kills (41) and digs (72). The offense was led by De La Torre with 14 kills followed by sophomore Julie Santana with eight kills. Santana, sophomore Brenda Davila and junior Isabel Marquez were able to slow down the Panthers offense with three, two, and three blocks, respectively. Ayala River notched a double-double with 23 assists and 18 digs and Libero De Jesus had 17 digs.
 
The Berea Mountaineers now stand at a (7-4) record as they will travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga. to play their first Collegiate Conference of the South match against Covenant College this Tuesday, September 20 at 7:00 p.m.
