BEREA, Ky. – Sophomore
Trey Minter knocked down a go-ahead shot with four seconds left to push
the Berea College men's basketball team past Piedmont University 71-69 on Sunday evening.
The win puts the Mountaineers at 3-2 in Collegiate Conference of the South action and 11-7 overall this season.
Minter guided the way for the Mountaineers with 24 points (7-12 overall, 9-11 FT), five assists, and three rebounds. Freshman
Bryce Riley played great in the 21 minutes he was in, scoring 11 points and leading the team with five rebounds. Senior
Isaac Caudill put up 15 points, had three boards and two steals.
The Mountaineers only shot 43 percent from the field compared to the Lions' 45 percent, but their aggressive defensive forced Huntingdon to turn the ball over 19 times.
The game was a very close game, there were 11 lead changes. The Mountaineers struggled in the first half as the Lions forced Berea to shoot 35 percent from the field and 25 percent from behind the arc. The Lions went into halftime up by three (33-30).
Starting the second half, the Mountaineers came out strong to gain a 7-point lead, however it was a back-and-forth game until the very end. With four seconds on the clock Minter hit a step back jumper to give the Mountaineers the lead 71-69. The Lions had a chance to tie it or take the lead, but thanks to the great defensive effort, the Mountaineers forced the Lions to turn the ball over to secure their third-straight win.
