Transylvania Tops Men's Basketball 94-84

Lexington, KY - The Transylvania University Pioneers defeated the Berea College men's basketball team 94-84 Friday afternoon in Lexington.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 13-12 lead before sophomore Andrew Jones drilled a three-pointer to give the Mountaineers their first lead of the ballgame with 12:35 remaining in the first half.  Berea pushed out to a 19-15 advantage on a jumper in the paint by senior Kevion Hudson, but Transy responded with a layup by Colby Napier and two free throws from Zach Stahlman to tie the game at 19-19.  Junior Ja'rel Montgomery gave the Mountaineers their final lead at 22-19 on a three-pointer before Transylvania outscored Berea 26-12 over the final nine minutes of the first half to head into the break with a 45-34 advantage.

Transy pushed the lead to 16 points early in the second half and held off a couple of Berea second-half runs to secure the victory.  Berea junior Trey Minter led all scorers with 28 points.  Playing in front of a hometown crowd, Lexington native Marquis Mackey added 15 points for the Mountaineers.  Berea finished the game shooting 42% from the floor, including 7-17 from three-point range, with ten different players scoring in the contest.  Transylvania finished the game with significant advantages in fast-break points (23 to just 3 for Berea) and points in the paint (52 to 38).

Berea (4-8) will conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule Saturday afternoon when they face Mount St. Joseph University in Cincinnati.
