Baseball Splits Sunday with One Game A Piece Against Carroll

BEREA, Ky. - The Baseball team had a hard-fought double header on Sunday going 1-1 to the Carroll University Pioneers at home. Berea won the first game 7-6, but unfortunately dropped the second game with a score of 14-20 in extra innings. Following the series, the Mountaineers sit at 2-1 on the season.
 
Game One - Berea 7, Carroll 6
 
The Pioneers started off fast, scoring 2 runs early in the first inning. The Mountaineers did not stay down for long, having a 4 run second inning. This was accomplished with the help of Fredison Rivera's two RBI-double to right field, followed by Marcelo Manrique's solo RBI-single to shortstop. Later Fredison Rivera slid into home off a wild pitch to score the fourth run for the Mountaineers.
 
Later in the contest, in the top of the third inning, Carroll scored another run to close the lead to 3-4. The Mountaineers would not lose this big lead for long with Berea scoring two runs in the bottom of the third. Jay Nunez hits an RBI-double to left center, bringing Zion Clay home to make the lead 5-3. And just to finish rounding them bases, Jay Nunez scores across home plate on a SAC RBI by Fredison Rivera, extending the Mountaineers lead to 6-3.
 
In the following inning Carroll scored a run to close Berea's lead to 4-6. Then in the top of the sixth, Carroll scored another run to close the lead even more with the score of 5-6. In the bottom of the sixth, Berea made their lead even bigger with Giovanny Ortiz with an RBI-single to left field making the score 5-7. Carroll adds one last run in the top of the seventh inning making the score 6-7.
 
After Derek Hay threw for six hard innings, giving up 7 hits and 3 runs, Christian Ortiz came in to relieve. Ortiz pitched the last 3 innings giving up three runs and 5 hits to close the game and secure the win for the Mountaineers giving Berea the first win for the day.
 
The Mountaineers recorded 9 hits in game one, while Sr. Derek Hay earned his first win of the season on the mound.
 
Game Two - Berea 14, Carroll 20
 
Berea was down going into the bottom of the third inning with a score of 5-0. But the bats got hot at the right time scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the third. Starting off Marcelo Manrique scored off an error by the shortstop. Then AJ Wylie earns an RBI-single with Peter Torbicki crossing home plate. AJ Wylie scored from an RBI-single to center field by Giovanny Ortiz. Jayden Junta scored the 5th run of the inning from Ricardo Serra's RBI-single to center field. Followed by that, Ricardo Serra and Giovanny Ortiz scored from a hit by Jay Nunez making the score going into the top of the fourth 5-7 with the Mountaineers on top.
 
Carroll comes back with 3 runs in the fourth inning to regain the lead with a score of 8-7. Then the bats came back to life for Berea with the Mountaineers scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Nunez, Manrique, Wylie, and Junta all scored RBI's. Following that, in the bottom of the seventh, Berea scored three more runs, increasing the lead to 8-14. This was helped by Manrique, Wylie, and Junta all hitting RBIs for the Mountaineers.
 
Going into the top of the ninth inning, Carroll scored 6 runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, Carroll scored 6 runs to win the game 20-14.
 
The Berea College Baseball team will return to action on Tuesday, hosting Wilmington College at the Berea College Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
