Berea, KY - After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Mountaineers fought back late in the second half to secure a tie against former conference rival Maryville College. The visiting Scots jumped out to a lead midway through the first half when Jorge Graniel scored on a penalty kick. Shortly after another defensive mistake, Hayden Tate of the Scots converted the second goal of the game, giving Maryville the 2-0 halftime lead.Â
The determined Mountaineers took advantage of a hard foul in the box, with
Tobore Takpor scoring the first goal of the season for Berea, trimming the Scots lead to 2-1. The equalizer came on a skillful run by
Ali Ferguson, who took a pass from
Victor Hernandez and launched a shot just past the outstretched arms of the Maryville keeper, making the score 2-2. Despite numerous attempts from the Scots, Mountaineer keeper
Eris Acosta saved several shots to keep the game at 2-2 for the remainder of the game.
Both teams were even with shots taken, with the Mountaineers holding a slight 17-16 edge. However, Berea only had three shots on goal while Maryville had eight, with strong defensive efforts by
Patrick Uwimana and
Peter Mensah in the second half helping to keep the Scots out of the goal.
The Mountaineers next return to the pitch this Saturday, hosting the Asbury Eagles. Kickoff for that match is set for 7:00 PM.Â
