BEREA, KY- After a hard fought tie last week, the Mountaineers defend off the Asbury Eagles to secure their first victory of the season. Berea College attacked hard in the opening minutes of the game, putting up multiple shots that tested the keeper.
Victor Hernandez took a shot from the right side of the pitch after stealing possession and scored, missing the goalies dive. The score being 1-0 at three minutes, spirits were high, but so were the defensive efforts of the Mountaineers.
Eris Acosta recorded one save while his teammates Partick Uwimana and
Glorie Muzeba controlled the back end.
Glorie Muzeba also recorded half an assist along with Vitcor Hernandez as the both helped Tabore Takpor score a header off of a late game corner kick. With the score now 2-0 and there being less than 10 minutes left, Berea did let up a goal to the Asbury Eagles on a penalty kick. The final score being 2-1.
Berea College struggled offensively in the second half as they were only able to get 2 shots compared to the eagles 14. Berea was also out shot in total, having 17 fewer shot attempts. Berea also committed 10 fouls in the second half and 15 the entire game. There were 5 yellow cards and 2 red cards pulled on Berea compared to only 2 yellow cards pulled on Asbury. Despite the fouls and penalties, the Mountaineers will continue to ride this momentum into their next game which will be contested at Centre College in Danville, KY Tuesday, September 12th at 7:30.
