BEREA, KY – In an electrifying five-set match at the Seabury Center, the Berea College Mountaineers edged out Spalding University with scores of 26-24, 25-19, 17-25, 26-24, and 15-12 to secure their first win of the season.
Senior
Deanna De La Torre led the Mountaineers' offense with 14 kills while also contributing 22 digs for a strong defensive performance. Setter
Idymel Ayala Rivera played a pivotal role, recording 42 assists, 7 kills, and a .316 hitting percentage, which proved instrumental in Berea's playmaking.
Alexis McCullough added 8 kills and a service ace, while
Nashaliz Garcia impressed with 6 kills, a .235 hitting percentage, and 3 block assists.
Defensively,
Zoe Fields and
Daniella Corona combined for 18 digs, while
Miranda Wennhold chipped in with 9 kills and a .300 hitting percentage. The Mountaineers showcased resilience and teamwork, overcoming a challenging Spalding squad to clinch the victory.
Berea will look to build on this momentum in their next home game against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) on September 7 at 11 AM.
