Baseball Recap: Mountaineers Compete in Series Against Mount St. Joseph University and Rose-Hulman

Game 1: Berea College at Mount St. Joseph University

Berea College Baseball returned to an action-packed weekend, first traveling to Mount St. Joseph to open conference play on Saturday. The first contest remained tightly contested through the final out. Mount St. Joseph struck first, taking a 1–0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Berea responded in the fifth, plating a run to even the score at 1–1. MSJ regained control with runs in both the sixth and seventh innings, extending its lead to 3–1.

The Mountaineers showed resilience, battling back to tie the game at 3–3 in the top of the eighth inning. However, in the bottom half of the inning, Mount St. Joseph answered with a run of its own and held on to secure a 4–3 victory.

Offensively, the Mountaineers recorded 14 hits as a team. Peter Torbicki led the way with four hits, while Zach Hudson, Sebastian Roman, and Ty Palmgren each contributed two hits. Additional hits came from Michael Mauney, Corbin Thacker, Giovanny Ortiz, and Miguel Serra. On the mound, starting pitcher Noah Madrid delivered another strong performance, pitching eight innings and allowing three runs.


Game 2: Berea College at Mount St. Joseph University

The second game of the series produced a much different outcome. Mount St. Joseph scored in four of the first six innings, building a commanding 9–0 lead heading into the eighth. In the top half of the inning, the Mountaineers showed signs of life, scoring two runs in an effort to extend the game. However, MSJ responded with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, securing a 12–2 victory.

Offensively, the Mountaineers were limited to four hits. Zach Hudson recorded a hit, scored a run, and drew a walk. Ty Palmgren added a hit and an RBI, while Miguel Serra contributed a hit and a walk. Sebastian Roman accounted for the team's remaining hit. On the mound, starting pitcher Peter Torbicki threw three innings, allowing four runs, two of which were earned.

Game 3: Berea College vs. Rose-Hulman

The Mountaineers headed back home on Sunday for a two-game series against conference opponent Rose-Hulman. The Engineers opened the game by scoring 5 runs in the first inning and never looked back, going on to score a demanding 23 runs in the game. The Mountaineers only managed to score 2 runs in the contest, both coming in the bottom of the third inning.

Berea recorded 8 hits as a team in the game. Zach Hudson led the Mountaineers with 2 hits and scored a run. The following players each recorded a hit in the game: Peter Torbicki, Ty Palmgren, Miguel Serra, Sebastian Roman, Aiden Blaszkowski, and Michael Mauney. The starter for the Mountaineers was Spencer Blackwell, who tossed 5.2 innings and gave up 10 runs.


Game 4: Berea College vs. Rose-Hulman

The second game of the series followed a similar pattern to the opener. Rose jumped out to an early 5–0 lead after two innings. The Mountaineers showed some resilience, getting on the board with a run in the bottom of the third. However, Rose continued to build momentum, adding nine runs over the next five innings to secure a 14–1 victory.

The Mountaineers recorded nine hits in the contest. Peter Torbicki led the way with two hits and an RBI. Zach Hudson added a hit, drew a walk, and scored the team's lone run. Additional hits came from Giovanny Ortiz, Ty Palmgren, Miguel Serra, Sebastian Roman, Lawrence Griffey, and Michael Mauney.

On the mound, starting pitcher Edrick Rivera worked two innings, allowing five runs. Gabriel Martinez made his season debut in relief, pitching three innings and striking out four batters in a strong outing.


The Mountaineers will return to action this weekend as they host Bluffton College for a three-game series.
