Box Score The University of Kentucky is not the only men's basketball team using the "platoon system" in the Commonwealth. Coach John Hemenway and the Berea College Mountaineers appear to have their own mass substitution pattern, as every member of the team saw the floor in their home opener a part of the 2014 Rainmaker Hospitality Shootout presented by the Comfort Inn and Suites.
The Blue Crew moved freely up and down the court using its size, height and depth to frustrate the Crusaders throughout the first half. Leading by as many as 12 points, Berea appeared to be on its way to a blowout win, but KCU stayed in the fight using timely 3-point shooting to narrow the gap to eight at the half.
Berea's frequent substitution pattern allowed for fresh legs to stay on the floor at all times and avoid foul trouble that became a big problem for the Crusaders. Midway through the second-half KCU's top center picked up his fourth foul, and then a quick technical foul that eliminated him from the game. Berea scored the two free throws for the technical, then two more for the foul to move the lead to 16 points and never looked back.
The Mountaineers were red hot from behind the three point arc tonight going 7-10 (70%) including Richard Parker's 4-5. Offensively Parker dropped in 18 points to lead the way for BC, just ahead of Seth Bechkam's 16 points. DeAnte Cisero made his presence felt dropping in 14 points, while Anthony Myrks added 12 and London Moore tossed in 11. Aaron Ponder just missed the double digit party with nine points. BC really took advantage of their length on the glass out rebounding KCU 40 to 24, with Tevin Webster leading the way with eight boards.
Berea will be back in action tomorrow at 3:00 pm when they face Union College, who knocked Asbury University in the Shootout's opening game.
