Streaky Hitting Dooms Softball Against Maryville

BEREA, Ky. – The Berea College softball team recorded eight hits over two games as they drop both matchups against Maryville College 6-0 and 8-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

With the pair of losses, the Mountaineers fall to 9-12 overall and 2-4 in USA South Athletic Conference action, while the Scots improve to 11-11 and 2-0 in conference play.

Game One Maryville 6, Berea 0
In the afternoon's first game, the Mountaineers struggled to place the bat on the ball as they totaled just two hits. The match was scoreless through four innings before the Scots spotted four runs in the top of the fifth to take the advantage. Maryville scored another two runs in the top of the seventh inning to win a 6-0.

Senior Caroline Nelson began the afternoon on the bump for Berea where she struck out two batters in the 4-1/3 innings she tossed.

Game Two Maryville 8, Berea 1
The afternoon's second game fared better for the Mountaineers in the hit column, finishing with seven. However, errors plagued Berea as the Mountaineers committed three.

Maryville took the lead in the top of the third by scoring two runs. The Mountaineers chipped at the deficit with an RBI single by freshman Autumn Adams to put Berea on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. However, this would be the only run the Mountaineers were able to bring across home plate as the Scots went on to outscore Berea 6-0 over the final three innings to take an 8-1 win to complete the sweep.

Freshman Madison McIntosh started on the mound for the Mountaineers where she tossed 6-1/3 innings and struck out four batters.

The Berea College softball teams continue their trek through conference play this weekend as they host Huntingdon College on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at the Berea College Sports Complex.
