The Mountaineer’s Offense Stall in Loss to Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. – The bats were cold for the Berea College baseball team as the Mountaineers managed just three hits in an 18-5 loss to Asbury University on Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers slide to 4-26 on the season with the loss.

Berea took the lead in the top of the first as freshman Michael Vazquez stole third base and eventually scored on an error by the Eagle's catcher to put the Mountaineers on the board. Freshman Ricardo Serra followed with a two-RBI double to right field to give Berea a 3-0 advantage going into the bottom of the first. The lead was short-lived as the Eagles doubled the runs in their half of the inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Following a scoreless second inning, freshman Jayden Junta knocked an RBI triple to right field, scoring fellow freshman Marcelo Manrique to trim the deficit 6-4. However, a huge inning for Asbury saw the differential grow 11-4. The Eagles used this momentum to take an 18-4 lead before the Mountaineers grabbed another run in the top of the seventh as freshman AJ Wylie reached home on a passed ball for a final score of 18-5.

The Berea College baseball team returns to action on Saturday in a doubleheader against conference foe Brevard College. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Brevard, N.C.
