Softball Split Against LaGrange

LAGRANGE, Ga. – The Berea College softball team split a pair of contests against LaGrange, winning the first game 3-0 and dropping the second 10-5 on Saturday afternoon.

After the contest, the Mountaineers sit at 10-15 on the season and 3-7 in conference action. The Panthers hold an 8-21 overall record and 3-5 in conference play.

Game One: Berea 3, LaGrange 0
The offense of the first contest of the afternoon was sparse as just nine total hits were recorded. Freshman Hayleigh Gnagie notched two RBIs in the contest, while junior Juliann Kirby recorded the other RBI.

Gnagie began the scoring for the afternoon in the top of the third with an RBI single to bring home freshman Madison McIntosh. The final runs of the contest were scored in the top of the fifth as Kirby hit a double down the leftfield line, scoring freshman Madison Yates. Gnagie recorded her second RBI of the contest on a groundout to second base as Berea went on to take game one 3-0.

McIntosh received the win on the mound for the Mountaineers as she tossed seven innings while she struck out five batters.

Game Two: LaGrange 10, Berea 5
The second game of the afternoon was a different tale than the first as the bats were hot for both sides with the Panthers recording 16 hits and the Mountaineers totaling 11.

The Panthers jumped out to an 8-0 advantage through two innings. However, the Mountaineers cut the deficit in half as they post four runs in the top of the third inning. Senior Ashley Spencer started the run with an RBI single to centerfield. Freshman Autumn Adams followed with a two-RBI single, while junior Kaitlynn Gaddis wrapped the inning with an RBI single of her own as Berea trailed 8-4.

The Mountaineers pulled to within three runs as Yates recorded a sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring Adams across home plate, but the momentum shifted in favor of the home team as the Panthers went on to outpace the Mountaineers 2-0 over the duration of the contest as Berea dropped game two 10-5.

The Berea College softball team returns to the diamond on Tuesday as they host Covenant College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Berea College Sports Complex.
