Berea Can't Quite Solve Bears

Box Score

BEREA, KY- The Berea College Mountaineer baseball team was beaten on Wednesday by a score of 11-2 to the University of Pikeville Bears. The Mountaineers threw nine different pitchers in the contest, six of which gave up at least one run.

Nate Metz got his first collegiate game start in the nonconference game, in which he started the titanic struggle with scoreless first inning (Metz's third appearance over the last four games). That would be all Metz would pitch, as the "Johnny Wholestaff" technique used by pitching coach Brian Hill was in full effect. The Mountaineers would give up three runs in the 2nd inning off Griffen Norris, but would bounce back for two runs, both coming on a Ryan Blevens two RBI single.

Cord Glass would go for a shutdown 3rd inning, and return in the 4th inning. Glass got two outs in his second inning of work, and then allowed runners to reach 3rd and 1st before being relieved by Zach Roberson, who would hit the next batter, and give up a three run double to the opposing pitcher. Roberson would be relieved by Nolan Sanders at the beginning of the next inning, who would give up one run, stretching the lead for UPike to 7-2. Matt Wilburn would finish the work for the "pitcher only" crew, as he would pitch the 6th inning, and give up only one unearned run (caused by a Works error).

Devin Belleville made his collegiate debut on the mound, and threw for a complete inning, giving up one hit and one run. Logan Hunt pitched through the 8th inning of the game, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks. Chris Works would pitch a scoreless 6th to bring the game to a close. The Mountaineers lost their 4th game in a row, with the final score being 11-2. Ryan Blevens was the only offensive producer, as he went 2-4 with a triple and two RBI's.

The Mountaineer take to Asbury on Friday evening to take on their former KIAC rivals from Wilmore, KY. The first game is set to start at 5:20pm with Chad Brown on the mound. Lance Shelton will take the ball in game two. Be sure to keep up with BC baseball on our social media pages.
